I live in Raleigh, N.C. - and have since 1972. I came here as the US Army Reserve Advisor then became the only advisor to the Reserves in the state. Then I got my "dear john" and retired. Started teaching wood shop one month after I retired and used my GI Bill to get my Masters in Education - never thought I'd ever get one but I did. Nicky was getting orientation for new arrivals at the Americal Division's Basic Combat Training Center at Chu Lai. About 10:15 on the morning of July 10, an instructor accidentally detonated a grenade in a classroom at LZ Bayonet, command post of the 198th Brigade. Gravely wounded in the explosion, Nicky died five days later at Chu Lai's 91st Evac Hospital. Two other soldiers died -- WO Wilbur J. Vachon III and SP5 Timothy T. Williams.
