We got picked to be a part of Armed Forces Day, 1967 at the Space Needle on the World's Fair ground. We left for Vietnam on Mar 4, 1968 on the USNS Geiger, from Long Beach, California. We docked at Subic Bay to refuel and then got to DaNang harbor on Mar 23rd (I think). We went to Chu Lai on an LST. I have pictures of a lot of you guys. Message is: Sony Pinard was my best friend in Vietnam. We served together at Bearcat until December, 1972, then we were both transferred to the 527th PSC in Saigon. Bearcat was a Thai base. Our unit, the 222nd CAB, was stationed there, along with the 240th Assault Helicopter Co., and a few others. Sony was a black Haitian, and had re-enlisted when he was sent to Vietnam. He was on the promotion list for E-6. He left Vietnam early, while I was on R&R in Hawaii, and I never got to say goodbye to him, and haven't found him since. We were different races, with different backgrounds, but we were best friends and both GIs. I would also like to find Robert Stegall, who was in the 240th at Bearcat and also the 527th. Stegall and I were draftees. He was still there when I left in April, 1972. I wish I had kept their SSNs. I just never thought about it. I never admired anyone more in my life than Sony. I'm an attorney now, and just printed out my application to join VVA, and will send it ! in. Everyone called me "Woody" i n Vietnam. I would give almost anything to say "Hi" to Sony again. I hope he's still alive, and findable.
