Message is: URGENTLY trying to locate anyone from units involved in an action involving units of the 1st Brigade 9th Divison on 18/19 August 1968 south east of Rach Kien. Also chopper crews in same action. Australian government is PRESENTLY revieweing a 1968 US recommendation for a high gallantry award for an Aussie flier, Garry Cooper, on attachement to USAF as a FAC. Garry was a passenger in a 3 man `bubble' type helo shot down during a C&C mission on 18 August 1968 at above location. The pilot, a young Warrant Officer who was married the week before in Hawaii, was killed and the aircraft crashed. Cooper, under heavy enemy fire draged a semi-conscious senior US Army officer, believed to have been either a half or full Colonel from the chopper to a rice paddy enbankement several hundred metres away. Throughout that night, Cooper and the Colonel, who had recovered, fought off a number of VC attacks killing meny of the enemy.
