I drove the water truck called "Head" and a tar truck with a guy named Shorty. After the tank fell off the water truck I got sent to a fire base somewhere. We built the road out of Lai Ke with the stupid "thumbs Up" hand painted on it at the beginning. I am proud to say I still have contact with at least one buddy, Dave Carey from WI! Now I would like to catch up with the rest of the "Team" that gave of themselves to help keep this Nation free. All of us went to the "Nam" in late 66 from Fort Riley. The USNS Barnett gave us the sea-lift to Vung Tau. (Jerry Law almost died from sea sickness) Duce& 1/2's gave us us a ride for our money to Camp Bearcat. (Larry Grainger tossing candy to what we thought/hoped were friendly's) At Camp Bearcat we dug in & started to set-up the Company area (Norm Faught falling into the pit!) and proceded to draw our first assignments. The airstrip/LZ (Don Burrough's thought it was a dragstrip & wanted to import his fast car from home.) was nearby (Roger Fischer wished he had gone to Warrant Officers school) where we air taxied to various assignments. The most I remember when at base, was tossing diesel into short drums, pulled out from under small sauna's they called personal hygene rooms, & throwing in a match. (Billy Howard insisted it was an attack on the base.) Those were the days when we operated out of Camp Bearcat!

Evening of 7 February 1968: A Company was directed to go back out at dusk to secure the HOC MON Bridge for 1st of 5th (MECH) coming from SAIGON...A Company was dismounted towards bush, our tracks near roadway behind us ... As 1/5th (Mech) came through on roadway (to our rear) .. "Charlie" opened up ... my platoon took some automatic fire and RPGs .. we returned fire ...also 1/5th opened fire...plenty of blue tracers in air...and RPGs hit short of 1st Platoon's position... our Mortars returned fire ...especially as we broke contact and followed 1/5th down roadway..we all arrived safely back to CuChi and our company area .. met a platoon member in the battalion aid station being treated a ricochet round hit his flak vest and him back of neck between shoulder ...
