I failed to mention that I've searched 101 and 1st Cav files at the National Archives, and Task Force X-Ray files at the USMC Archives, both in the D.C. metro area. I live in the D.C. metro area. Additionally, I have written to various commands seeking the accident report for the bombing of FSB Birmingham on 16 March 1968. Unit reports of the time record 24 men hospitalized (of 33 wounded) with wounds from the bombing, and at least 7 dead immediately, or within a day or two of the incident. A "Significant Incident" report was filed on the bombing by the 1st Brigade S-3, one Major Othar J. Shalikashvili, signed by his assistant, Captain John B. Jones. I have good reason to suspect a report was written. Where is it? Also, can one familiar with Air Force ordnance tell me what the following means: from a Spot Report from III MAF to FMFPAC, "FOUR D-2's (M-82 500 LB BOMBS) HAD BEEN SCHEDULED FOR T! HIS POSITION BY TASK FORCE X-RAY. CLEARING AUTHORITY IS UNKNOWN...." What were the D-2's? Opinions differ on the plane making the drop. Some report a B-57 Canberra bomber. Some say a F-105 while others suggest a Marine fighter/bomber. The aircraft was neiher heard not seen by witnesses. I did receive a good suggestion from a retired Army BG to review the next higher command files at NARA, the 24 Provisional Command, US Army. I will do so. Thanks to all that have written. He was injured in vietnam when his paltoon leader picked up an unframiliar gernade and shrapnal injured him but unfortunatly killed his platoon leader. All that occured in early February. He healed up but was sent back out. He was in a squad with two Sgt. Strahm's which would seem very uncommon and very identifyable. He eventually left vietnam with a staft infection on his spinal cord and went to a military hospital in Japan and then was transferred to one in Maryland.

He served from May7th 1967 to Feb2nd 1968.He was killed in action on feb 2,68 when as a squad leader on a five man recon the squad was ambushed by a large enemy force at the village of AN MY and during the initial burst the squad's medic was hit and severely wounded.George positioned the squad and under the cover of their fire he went to the aid of the medic who was lying about forty yards away.Although hit two seperate times in his effort to reach the side of his medic and friend[Peter Heissenbuttel]he continued on until he fell mortally wounded from the enemy's concentrated fire. He had just turned 20 yrs old a few days earlier.He had his souped up 55 chevy with the scoop on the hood and mag wheels waiting in front of the house for him.His Motown records were waitin.His steppin out clothes were waitin in the closet.I was gonna set him up with a few GIQs.His favorite saying was "Don't sweat the small stuff".He sang the song 'MY BUDDY'when he was in the 5th grade.He loved life.He loved his friends more. He received the Silver Star posthumously. George and Peter are on the wall together just as they died,George on panel 36E line 73 and directly underneath is Peter on panel 36E line 74.My family didn't know the name of the soldier George tried to save until recently and we've noticed whenever we made a rubbing at the Vietnem Wall we had unbeknownst to us also partially rubbed Peter's name.I wonder if Peter's family does the same thing,we don't know who they are or where they live.But it probably would be comforting to them to know that their son did not die alone IN VIETNAM WE LOST THE BEST OF THE BEST '

He had just retired as an army recruiter where he was assigned in Richmond, KY approximately 9 months earlier.
