Message is: A few days before Christmas 1969 (?) , my Mom, myself and 2 older sisters were looking at Christmas decorations in our small town of Jenkins Kentucky. It was late, cold and snow was beginning to fall. We spotted a lone soldier in uniform standing on the street corner waiting for a bus. I can't remember how he made it to Jenkins, but he was on his way home to (Ohio??) to surprise his family for Christmas. However, the bus would not be by until the next day. My sister (9) and myself (7) cried for our Mom to take him home and let him stay at our house for the night. She did. I can remember him talking to my Dad the next morning after breakfast and before he caught the bus. My Dad had been a Lt. Col. during WWII. We did receive a letter from him later thanking us for our hospitality. My mom passed away in 1987 and Dad last October. While cleaning out a closet in their house, I came across that letter. After checking the SS Death Index and the Wall memorial nam! es, I believe he is still alive. I do have his Social Sec. number on this letter, however I do not want to give that out. He asked me to marry him. We corresponded for a year. Then, when he returned in the spring of 1968 he proposed agin but I had to leave. I was contracted to go on the road in a show. Message is: Mr. Smith, I am trying to contact you concerning the events that happened on Aug. 21, 1968. We were wounded together on a mission, I do not know where we were in country. I cannot remember what transpired on this night. Only bits and pieces. We were in a company operation. We arrived by landing craft from the river and camped out on a open field. The woods were about 1000 yards away. We had received incoming rounds at midnight. Nobody was hit though, but the military fired flares that turned night into day. It was easy to see the woods and all our commrads. About an hour later, we received more incoming rounds. The first explosion landed 9 feet away from me, wounding me. I was told by other GI's that I had ran back to where I had my sleeping area and woke up the guy next to me and told him I was wounded. I was also up and running around until someone tackled me and held me to the ground. I need information to help support my claim to the VA. I need a statement from you of anything that h! appened on this night that you can remember. Such as what type of incoming rounds we were hit with?, any unusual happenings, if you can remember me and how far I was thrown from the concussion of the mortar round or what happened. Message is: "Junior" was my cousin from Farmingham, Michigan. His MOS was 11D10 and he was KIA by small arms fire on May 23, 1968. I returned to the world the first week of June, '68 and was met at Chicago's O'Hare by relatives who told me about Juniors death and drove me to Farmingham for the funeral. The army provided no details to the family and they felt I could tell them something. I couldn't and have wondered all these years about the circumstances of his death.
