Message is: I recently came across an old photo album in a thrift store. I didn't think that it belonged there so I bought it in hopes of finding a family member to give it to. It belongs to a Victor M Colons. The backs of the pictures are not labeled - except for a few in Spanish. In one of the pictures there is a calender dated in 1967. Message is: I am searching for anyone who knew/served with Jim Camp. He was KIA 2-4-69 in Cu Chi when his platoon was in a night defensive position and the unit came under enemy fire. I believe he was the platoon leader (filling in for someone else) at the time of his death. He had been a member of Class 33 of 71st Co, NCOC, Fort Benning in 68. On the back of his Soldier's Handbook are the names of the "4th Squad" "Camp - Leader, Gilmore, Stahly, Sonka, Bewut, Peters, Ponench, Moreno, Fickel, Perkins" His 'job' number is 11B40, and he was an E-6, Staff Sergeant. He was from Winterset (Madison County) Iowa. He died just a few days short of his 21st or 22nd birthday- I can't remember now. He was engaged to a girl named Patty, so friends of his may have heard him talk about her. His mom had died about 10 years earlier, but his dad, several brothers and sisters, and several neices and nephews cared DEEPLY for him and MISS HIM to this day. I am the oldest of his neices, and! was at a hard, very impressionable age - just a few years younger than Jim - when he was killed. It wasn't an easy thing to accept, and it has taken YEARS to come to grips with it, actually. I want to say THANK YOU to all of you who served the US in VN. You are appreciated, and VERY SPECIAL. I know it's been hard, and I apologize for the way in which some people react to you....... Jim went willingly, and proudly served. He did his job well, from all indications, and his family is proud of him. If you knew Jim, or know some of the persons whose names I've listed, please reply. I really would like to know anyone who knew him. Jim saved someone's life shortly before he was killed - if you know who that was, I would like to know that, too. Any gaps you could fill in for me would be greatly appreciated. I think it's great that there are these websites - I hear there are great success stories (successful searches) because of this.
