Message is: I've never been able to locate Lt. Berkey to thank him for what he did for me. Prior to the military, I'd never known the kind of man he was and have never forgotten him. I was fortunate to know him before he received his orders for Vietnam. He was deployed in '68, I went in '69. In my attempt to find him I did locate his son Gavin. He asked me as many questions about his Dad as I was asking him. They never talked of his military service especially Vietnam. Gavin said his Dad doesn't want to be found. I respect that. He told me that his place was bombed the night before he left (I guess in 1972). He had photos, but they are now with his 2nd wife I suppose. He died in '92. He developed Diabetes II around '81, then an enlarged spleen was removed, and not long after he developed the rare (AML) form of leukemia. He died in UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. He is from Henderson and attended Louisburg College, UNC, and UNC-G. He worked for UPS in Greensboro NC.
