Message is: In 1965 or 1966, when I was 11 or 12 years old, my grade school class wrote Christmas letters to people who were serving in Viet Nam. I wrote a letter to PSG George Smith. He wrote back to me on January 31, 1966. I still have his letter and envelope. His return address was ôPSG George F. Smith (I think ôFö is the MI), RA 17297476 (I think ôRö is the first letter), HHC 2nd BDE., APO San Francisco 96345.ö His letter said that his unit was the first Stateside Unit sent to Viet Nam. He arrived there in June 1965. George was at Fort Riley before he came to Bein Hoa, Viet Nam. He came by boat from California to Viet Nam, and it took 21 days. George wrote that he was due to leave Viet Nam in June 1966. He sent me, along with his letter, one of his Division patches. I still have that patch. George said that the patch is the First Infantry Division, or better known as the ôBig Red One.ö I would like to write to him. Does anyone have any information about George? Message is: Looking for anyone that may have served with my uncle, my mom's brother, Ronald L. Watson. He was born Dec. 29, 1943, died August 25, 1966. He died near Binh Duong province, near Hwy. 16 after his 16 man recon team came on the Phu Loi battalion. Earlier they had been participating in a road clearing operation. According to newspaper accounts, "Spec. Watson was instrumental by the use of his firepower, in creating confusion and casualties on the onrushing insurgents. Moving from one position to another, he exposed himself to a tremendous barrage of hostile fire so that members of his patrol could remove their critically wounded comrades from the danger area." "During this valorous act,Spec. Watson was mortally wonded. His heroic actions in the face of a well armed and numerically superior Viet Cong force inspired his embattled companions to renew efforts and resulted in the complet rout of the hostile force". Ronald was awarded the Bronze Star with a "V" devi! ce posthumously, along with the Purple Heart, several other medals, and one from the South Vietnamese government. He had previously served with the Oklahoma 45th National Guard Unit before joining the the regular army. We just want to see if there are any surviving members of his unit, or anyone who remembers him or served with him. We have always just wanted to let you know that you are all like family to us and we will never forget any of you. We have never talked or met with anyone who served with Ronald. It would be such a blessing to know that someone is still alive and remembers him. Maybe they might have a picture of him when they served together. My other reason is that I am trying to locate a member of the 3rd platoon Dco. 2nd Bn. 14th. Inf. 25th. Div. that remembers the day I was wounded while firing an m 79 round into a fresh mound of dirt on the road we were securing while waiting for our supplies for the day. Message is: Hi, I have never served. I am here to try and track a US soldier for a dear friend of mine, Neville, who is an Australian Army vietnam Vet. He told me of a GI friend who he swaped shirts with at Phuoc Tuy, near Ving Tau, South Vietnam in 1967. I know he would love to make contact with him if at all possible. From my research, the patches on the shirt indicate that he was US Army, and a secialist 4. His surname was Fossum, and his service number, marked inside the shirt was 4691x.
