Message is: Lloyd had been stationed at Ft. Carson, CO until he went to Vietnam. He was killed on Sept. 5th, non-hostile. On casualty report he drowned after he stood up, tripped and fell into water. Message is: Richie was born on November 17th, 1927. His father was my mother's brother. I am sorry that I don't know his specific military information as I am 63 and he would be 79. Richie had been in a motorcycle accident as a passenger a long time ago and had his right leg amputated above the knee. He had a prosthesis, but used a wheel chair most of the time. Leach, Jr. At that time I did not include his nickname, which is what most everyone knew him by. If anyone served with or knew my dad, Lt. Colonel Anthony James "BUCKIE" Leach I would very much appreciate you contacting me. He was from a small town in upstate New York called Elmira. Stationed at the Pentagon directly before his tour in Vietnam. Retired out of Fort Meade, MD upon his return home. He served in the Korean war, and went to OCS at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. He directed the army's Penthalon team in San Antonio, Texas, went to the German war college in Hamburg Germany and my favorite base, Fort Slocum, New York. I was in my first year of college when he was sent to Vietnam, and as was the general mood of people my age at that time, it shames me to say that I was violently opposed to his beliefs at that time. He was diagnosed with cancer in September of 1986, and was gone before Christmas. It aggressively attacked every soft organ in his body. He was only 58 years old. Even though we mended our differences around 1983, I bitterly regret the years we lost because of my naive stupidity and the Colonel's stubbornness. As I put this to paper, I know that it must sound terribly spoiled and selfish of me not to have supported him back then. I still have a letter he wrote to me while he was in Vietnam. I had written him one of my usual tirades about morality, criticizing not only his presence in Vietnam, but his ties to the military in general. At the end of my letter, I wrote (sarcastically, and with every intention of hurting him) "We say prayers to God every morning that He bring peace and keep any more of our young men from being killed in your stupid war." He wrote back one line, and it said: "I say the same prayer every day, kid."
