Message is: At the end of February or beginning of March 1968 a Regiment+ of NVA plus VC units were staging in a valley on the Song Ba River just east of Cung Son for an all out attack on Tuy Hoa South Free World Forces Area (THSAC) that was made of Tuy Hoa Sub Area Command-THSAC, the 91st Med Evac Hospital, 577th Engineer BTN and support units, units of the 173rd and 101st ABN, Engineer and support units, and the ROK White Horse Div (some 50,000 military + dod civilian). Tuy Hoa AFB and THSAC were not major targets like the DMZ, Hue City, DaNang, and others during TET - there were more than a dozen smaller actions, but no all out attack. Tuy Hoa South was the only major area that had not been completely over run up to that point in time and the NVA/VC were preparing to change that. With most of the line units of the 173rd, 101st, and White Horse out in the field in the highlands area - both THSAC and the AFB were very vulnerable. An offensive counter strike (The Tuy Hoa Raid) against the NVA/VC in the Song Ba River valleys 6 to 10 Km west of Tuy Hoa was formulated that included coordinated: - air strikes from Army, Navy, and Air Force planes, off shore Naval bombardment, Army 175mm and 8" guns, and a full heard of Buffalo to make sure. The joint services offensive attack was very successful - enemy casualties were reported as very heavy and the reamaining enemy forces fled back toward Cambodia. Units of the 173rd were called on to do recon and S&D mopup of the targeted valleys shortly after the Tuy Hoa Raid. Timely execution of the locally planned co-ordinated joint services operation prevented many American casualties - that could have reached several thousand. This included the 91st Med - which very well could have been the only US soft target ever to be over run during the entire war. Some 300 to 500 doctors, nurses, and wounded GI's that could not be Med Evaced off shore were a prime target, and would have made for a very tragic story on the TV news broadcasts back in the world at that time. The commander, a retired Army General, that okayed the Raid passed away about five years ago. The two guys that did the Raid's master plan have retired and are living(?). Because of the combined effort on everyone's part, from all services, a lot of us were spared a major catastrophy. If you were there in Tuy Hoa South that night and remember watching or taking part in this action - I'd like to hear from you. Thank you.

Message is: I realize this e-mail site may be for more recent veterans as the Vietnam Era vets and or more recent wars other than WW11. My parents both died in 1995 from cancer. In the belongings was a letter from a close friend of theirs postmarked on 31 Dec. 1946. The return address from "Ernie Boston" is 309 S. 4th St. Toronto, Ohio. My parents often talked about Ernie and other people they both served with and all were Naval medical and Naval Psychiatric Corpsmen. The letter is in perfect shape and still in the original envelope and folded exactly as "Ernie" mailed it. I have tried other sites to find the relatives of "Ernie" but to no avail. I think the relatives might enjoy this letter as it contains much of his life just after he was officially dishcharged from the Navy on 01 June, 1946 from where, he doesn't say. My Mother was also in the Navy and met my dad through Ernie as their story went. They always said they would love to have known what happened to him. He mentions so many other people in the letter and perhaps his relatives might enjoy reading this insight to his life just after WW11. I have tried the NavyOnline but that doesn't go back to that era. Can you please help me find the relatives or possibly good friends who may have known Ernie Boston. Really appreciate your help. The letter is only four pages but has some interesting information that relatives may enjoy reading. Both my parents said they would love to find Ernie or find out what happened to him and my dad mentioned him not long before he died. When I saw this letter, I want to try myself. It is a simple letter. People Ernie mentioned in his letter:eddie Jung and Barney Whipple,ommert, Johnson, Kugher, Washburn, Graffy, hodge, Wippel(spelled a different way or different person perhaps), Miss Nicholas, Big Boston, Bill Poth and Judy Jensen, "Big Bill Pressley, the Bull of the Woods", and Diamond Johnson. ernie's last known address on 31 Dec. 1946 was Box 331, Bethany, West Virginia.
