Winter '65..... rain and more rain. Hate going out in the mess but it our turn. it was like any other patrol: go set up wait-- no one comes-- packup return... except this was not going to be like any other patrol. This was going to change my life for ever and i never really knew it then.

It just happened and the next thing i knew it was over, but now with losing some one i really cared for he was like a brother and yet we hardly knew each other. He called my my nick name "sweet-pea" but this time he was calling for his mother. The sound of this voice still rings in my mind at times. but tonight it will ring and ring, and ring. Mom help me it hurts so bad please make it go way, please. I found him and pulled him close to me and told him i was there if he needed me. At 0545 or so the sun rose ever so slow as if to keep him alive a little while longer. I prayed to him that put here asking for my life to trade for his. Finally the first rays of light hit us both and i tore off part my shirt and clean off his face. He was so young to have this happen to him. Mom, mom, mom. With tears in my eyes i pulled him close and told him how much i, "his mom" and father loved him and we were proud of the things he had done. Then i looked deep into his blue eyes and wiped away a tear from his and my eye. I raised his head up kissed him good and then just held him until he died.

After that time i was empty i asking my self what would his mother & father think of this 19 year old white male loving their son that much as to stay with him and take away the pain he felt. his name is no more but his face and the tears in his eyes are still with me. Even today i can recall it when i think of him. I love you my friend. That's how i started using that term:

"LIFE WITH OUT LOVE IS NO LIFE AT ALL"

R.V.N. 1965

THE HARD TIMES COME AND GO;
BUT THE SONG THAT KEEPS LIFE
SWEET AND LOVE PURE SHALL
NEVER DIE; ONLY GROW.

MIND IN FLIGHT

CLOUDS OF DOOM
AND DARK OF NIGHT,
FRIGHTENED MIND
IN HOPELESS FLIGHT;
A LOVELESS KISS
A LIE SO FAIR,
AND FRANTIC WINGS
STILL BEAT THE AIR.
A TWISTING WIND,
A STORM THAT BLINDS,
THE LIGHTENING FLASH
WITH SHARPENING TINES.
A DYING WORD,
A SOUNDLESS CRY,
DOES SOMEONE KNOW
WHY DREAMS MUST DIE?
ONE WOMAN KNOWS
WHY MINDS ARE BLACK
I CRIED FOR LOVE,
SHE TURNED HER BACK.

THE PRINCE

YOU ASK, WHAT IS IT I DREAM OF?
IS IT FAME, FORTUNE, WOMEN AND LOVE
NONE OF THESE MY DREAMS WILL BE,
I DREAM OF WIND AND BEAUTY FREE.
GLEAMING MUSCLES IN THE SUN,
GOD MADE HE AND THE WIND AS ONE,
UPON THIS GREEN EARTH HE PUT THEE,
BE YOU RED, OR GOLD, OR BLACK, OR BAY;
YOU ARE THE PRINCE OF NATURES FORCE,
YOU'RE WIND AND SUN....YOU ARE.. THE HORSE.

THE DOVE AND THE EAGLE

DAYS OF BEAST AND DAYS OF MAN,
PEOPLE DO WHATEVER THEY CAN,
THRU LOVE, AND TEARS, AND CANDID STRIFE,
TO GUIDE THEM THRU THE PAIN OF LIFE.
VOLUMES ARE PAGES OF DIARIES KEPT,
RIVERS ARE FULL OF TEARS WE'VE WEPT,
EAGLES THRU SKIES OF ECSTASY SOAR,
DOVES LEFT LONELY, JUST WANTING MORE,
OLD CHRISTMAS MISTLETOE, LEFT HANGING ALOFT,
PEOPLE LEFT NEEDING, BECAUSE THEY WERE SOFT.
GOOD THINGS GROW OLD, AND ARE USED NO MORE,
WEAK THINGS GROW WEAKER, AND THE STRONG THINGS SOAR,
TO BE STRONG, AND YOUNG, NOT WEAK AND OLD,
FOR THE DOVE HAS NO PRIDE, AND THE EAGLE IS BOLD.

THE SONG

OVER BLUE-GREEN CRYSTAL, SEA BIRDS SOAR,
OF LOVE I'VE KNOWN I HAVE TO SEE MORE,
SECRETS OF LOVE FROM THE SEA FOR AGES,
TO ONLY KNOW MORE THRU ITS MOONLIT PAGES,
BY THIS SHORE MANY A LOVER SHALL MEET,
BUT I HEAR NO WORDS, NO LOVE SHALL I SEE,
I'M ALONE IN ITS VELVET ARMS, WHY MUST IT BE?
IF I HAD MY LOVE I NEED NOT WRITE,
WE'D BE ONE IN THE OCEANS SIGHT.
THESE SECRETS I SHARE WITH MY ONLY FRIEND,
BUT THE WAVES SAY, " LOVE HAS NO END ",
WHERE IS THE BEGINNING, WHERE IS LOVES GATE?
MY ANSWER IS A SONG, FOR TEARS SAY TO WAIT.

YOU ARE THE ONE

YOU THAT WALKS WITHIN MY DREAMS,
YOU WHO ARE MY PLANS AND SCHEMES,
YOU MY HEART DOTH SPEAK.
YOU WHOSE EYES ARE SHINING BRIGHT,
YOU ARE MY GUIDING LIGHT,
YOU ARE THE ONE I SEEK.
YOU ARE THE ONE MY LIPS DARE KISS,
YOU ARE THE ONE MY HEART DARES MISS,
TO YOU MY LOVE I SHOW.
YOU ALONE WHOM I WOULD MOURN,
FOR THIS MY LOVE WAS BORN,
YOU ALONE SHOULD KNOW.
YOU ARE GONE FROM ME ONCE MORE,
AGAIN YOU HAVE SHUT THE DOOR,
YOUR LOVE CAN MAKE ME WEAK.
YOU WHO BURNS ME WITH YOUR TOUCH,
WHOSE LOVE I NEED SO MUCH,
WHOSE LOVE I SEEK.

PLEASE LADY

WHY DOES MY HEART STILL HOLD YOU?
I REALLY WANT TO KNOW;
WHY CAN'T I FORGET YOU?
PLEASE LADY, LET ME GO!
YOU ARE A STRANGER TO ME, REALLY,
AND YET YOU'RE ALWAYS THERE,
NOT EVEN SLEEP CAN SHUT YOU OUT,
IT'S MORE THAN I CAN BEAR!
THERE'S ALWAYS SOME REMINDER,
NO MATTER WHERE I GO,
SO IF YOU WANT ME, TELL ME
PLEASE LADY, LET ME KNOW
LOVE TAKES ITS TOLL
TAKE ME OUT OF THIS WORLD,
WHERE REALLY IS HURLED,
INTO THE FACE
OF A GOWN OF WHITE LACE,

WHERE LOVE TAKES ITS TOLL,

WHERE SUNSHINE IS RAIN,
AND TEARS ALWAYS STAIN,
VEILS AND FLOWERS
AND LONG, ENDLESS HOURS,
I HAVE NO GOAL.
BUT TO BE SOME WHERE,
THERE'S ALWAYS LOVE THERE,
WHERE FROWNS ARE SMILES,
THERE ARE HEAPS AND PILES
OF LAUGHTER, FOR THE SOUL.
A GESTURE, A JOKE,
AND GOOD HAPPY FOLK,
NOT A HURT, NOT A SIGH,
BUT A RAINBOW STANDING BY,
AND LOVE DOESN'T TAKE ITS TOLL.
WITH HONEY AND BEES,
AND LAUGHING WILLOW TREES
WHERE HATE IS ABSURD,
AND EVERYONE IS HEARD,
AND LOVE DOESN'T TAKE ITS TOLL.
BUT WHEN I SAW YOU AGAIN,
I FEARED YOU MIGHT WIN,
AND BRING ME BACK TO LIFE.
OF BEING YOUR HUSBAND,
AND LOVE WILL TAKE ITS TOLL
WITHOUT LOVE WE WILL PERISH,
AND LOSE ALL THAT WE CHERISH,
AFTER LOVE COMES THE SMILE,
SO I'LL STAY FOR AWHILE,
AND LET LOVE TAKE ITS TOLL.

DEATH OF A FRIEND

R.V.N. 1965
THE BLACK BITTERNESS OF THE CLOUDY SKY LURKS ABOVE
THE RAIN STARTS TO FALL AS ALWAYS THRU THE YEARS,
YOUR DARKNESS OF HEART IS A THUNDERCLOUD,
AND YOU START TO SHED YOUR TEARS,
THE STORM SCREAMS ITS FURY TO ALL
AND LIGHTNING'S A GOLD YELLOW STREAK,
YOU WREAK YOUR WRATH NOT ON THOSE THAT OSTRACIZE YOU,
BUT ON THOSE THAT ARE WEAK.
AND AS THE RAINS FALL, YOUR TEARS FALL,
AS THE RAIN SUBSIDE, YOUR TEARS SUBSIDE,
BUT WHAT GOOD DID IT DO?
AND FOR WHOM HAVE YOU CRIED?

I WALK ALONE

THO I AM HERE, WITH MY FAMILY, I AM NOT A MEMBER,
WITH THE LOVE I'VE KNOWN AS LONG AS I REMEMBER,
ALTHO I'M HAPPY, THE SUN HASN'T YET SHONE,
NO MATTER WHO I'M WITH, WHERE I GO, I WALK ALONE,
MY MIND WANDERS, TO SPARKING WATERS, AND LOVE, I
CARE FOR THESE,
BUT EVEN THO DARK CLOUDS COME, AND ARE GONE,
THE DAY IS BRIGHT, THEN RAINY, I WALK ALONE.
THE BLADES OF GRASS ARE GREEN, YET ONE IS YELLOW, DYING,
AND MAYBE MY LIFE IS THIS , DARK CRYING,
I'M MISSING A PIECE OF THE PUZZLE, MAYBE IT'S ALREADY DONE,
I'M IN A CROWD, YET I AM ALONE.
TIME IS NOTHING, AND ENDLESS WELL, DARK AND GROWING DEEP,
TIME IS LOST, LOVE, HATS, AND UNDERSTANDING..
FOR THESE I WEEP,
I LOVE, I LOSE, THEN LOVE AGAIN, IT IS NEVER GONE,
BUT THO I LOVE HER ALWAYS, FOREVER, I WALK ALONE.
I MUST GO ON
RIDE THRU THE MEADOW ON A GOLDEN LIGHT STEED,
BLOOD AND BOTTOM AND LIGHTENING SPEED,
SMOOTH WHITE LIGHT ON WAVES OF GREEN,
YOUNG BUCK DEER SO FINE AND LEAN,
ALL THE LIFE, BORN OF A SEED.
WIND HITS THE TREES, THEY SING AND SWAY,
SUNSHINY LEAVES, LIKE A MOONLIT BAY,
I CAN'T STOP NOW I MUST GO ON,
FOR IF I STOP, IT WOULD TAKE TOO LONG,
I HAVE MANY FRIENDS TODAY.
MY BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS, FULL OF MUSCLE AND BONE,
NEVER AGAIN SHALL I BE ALONE,
UNDER THE TREES, THE DAPPLED SUN,
RUNNING FREE, BORN TO RUN,
AS WATER RUNS, OVER CLEAN, WET STONE.
I TELL THE WIND AND SING MY SONG,
I CAN'T STOP NOW, I MUST GO ON ,
I'LL KEEP MY FRIENDS, AND I KNOW HOW,
SO YOU SEE I CAN'T STOP NOW,
ELSE I WAKE, AND MY STEED BE GONE.

DAY DREAMING

BORN TO BE WILD....THEN TAME,
COMING HOME AND BACK AGAIN,
THRU THESE PHASES A CHILD DID GO,
BUT THAT WAS SO VERY LONG AGO.
THE UNIMPORTANT THING OF AGE,
AS VOICES RAISE SO FULL OF RAGE,
TO PROTECT THEIR GIRLS FROM WORDS AND HARM,
AND THEN, IN PEACE, RAISE AN ARM.
THE THUNDER HEARD THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT,
THE GLEAMING HAWS THAT FLASH SO BRIGHT,
TWO, THREE, FOUR HUNDRED NEAR,
RAISE THE VOICE SO ALL CAN HEAR.
BUT CHILDHOOD FANCIES PASS AWAY,
AND THERE NEVER LEAVES A DAY,
WHEN I DON'T THINK OF ROADS,
LAUGHTER, "HANG ON TIGHT",
AS WE MOVE TOWARD ANOTHER PLIGHT.

FADING

A DREAM, SO LIKE A FALLING STAR,
A DREAM, TO TELL YOU WHO YOU ARE,
IT'S DRIFTING AWAY, I CAN SEE.
A DREAM, IT'S FLOATING ON A CLOUD
A DREAM, DON'T SPEAK OF IT ALOUD,
IT'S DRIFTING AWAY, LET IT BE.
LIKE THE WIND IT HAS NO NAME,
AND THE WIND, TO ME IT CAME,
PLEASE COME BACK TO ME.
MY DREAM, MY DREAM, DON'T FADE AWAY,
WE'LL RIDE THE HILLS AGAIN SOMEDAY,
TOGETHER---ALWAYS FREE,

THE DEATH OF TWO LOVERS

I MET HER AT DAWN,
ON THE BLUE CASTLE LAWN,
SHE SMILED, WITH LOVE IN HER EYES;
TOGETHER WE'D REST.
TILL LOVE FILLED HER BREAST,
UNDER THE CHANGING DAWN SKY
WITH LOVE BURNING STRONG,
WE KNEW WE'D LOVE LONG,
SHE'LL NOT SEE WHIT LACE,
I REACH OUT TO TOUCHING HER FACE,
IT'S ALL I WANT----EVER,
WITH NO LOVE TO GIVE,
I CAN NO LONGER LIVE,
BUT THE BLADE WAS DEADLY SWIFT;
AND NOW I'M SURE,
OUR LOVE IS PURE,
AND DEATH IS A BLESSED GIFT.
I STILL MEET HER AT DAWN,
ON THE BLUE CASTLE LAWN,
TOGETHER WE REST,
TILL LOVE FILLS HER BREAST,
UNDER THE CHANGING DAWN SKY.
TWO A.M. AND A LOST LOVE
THE MOON IS FULL AND GLOWS LIKE A HOT COAL,
FRESHLY TAKEN FROM THE FIRESIDE,
AS I LAY HERE I CAN FEEL THE VELVET NIGHT
SOFTLY CARESSING HER SKIN,
I CAN STILL FEEL YOUR KISS STILL WARM ON MY LIPS,
AND IF I CLOSE MY EYES, I CAN IMAGINE YOU ARE MINE AGAIN.
THE NIGHT BIRD SING ITS DEATH SONG, LIKE A BELL,
TOLLING MY FATE,
THE WIND HOWLS ITS CONTINUOUS HOWL, LIKE AN
EAGLE THRU THE TREES IN THE DAYTIME,
THE STARS TWINKLE INVITINGLY, " COME TO US ",
LIKE A SWEET SHOP IN THE CITY,
AND THE CLOCK TICKS AWAY, AS IF IT WERE MY
PERSONAL LOVE CHIME.
YES, THE NIGHT HAS MANY WONDERS, AS IF GOD
MEANT FOR IT TO HURT,
YOU CAN FEEL THE MYSTICAL AIR ABOUT YOU, AS
WHEN YOU ARE ALONE,
BUT THEN, YOU ARE ALONE IF YOU'VE LOST A LOVE,
FOR BENEATH THE NIGHT'S A BRIGHT DAY, AND
BENEATH YOUR SMILE IS A DARKNESS NOT SHOWN.

JUST A THOUGHT

I JUST CAN'T KEEP FROM SMILING,
WATCHING KITTENS AT PLAY,
MY MIND DRIFTS BACK TO FLOWERS
AND FIELDS OF YESTERDAY.
I THINK OF TRAILS UNRIDDEN,
OF UNFOUND DREAMS OF GOLD,
ALL THE RAINBOWS NEVER REACHED,
WATCHING MY LIFE UNFOLD.
RACING NOW, ACROSS A FIELD,
WIND IN A STRAND OF WHEAT,
I'M NOT SURE, CAN IT BE REAL?
DREAM HORSE, NO CHANCE TO MEET.
THERE IS NO TIME TO DREAM NOW,
I THINK I'M REALLY GLAD,
I KNOW MY DREAMS ARE HOPELESS,
INSIDE THAT MAKES ME SAD.
I SMILE NOW, WITH PRESENT THOUGHT,
I KNOW, INSIDE OF ME,
CERTAIN THINGS WILL NEVER CHANGE,
MY DREAMS ARE EVER FREE.

SEA DREAMS

BEYOND THE RED-YELLOW SUNSET,
BEYOND THE RESTLESS SHAPE OF MOONLIGHT,
THRU THE WISHING STARS,
I SAW MY FATE SHINING BRIGHT.
THRU THE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS,
MY THOUGHTS TURN VIVIDLY TO YOU,
AND IN THE VELVET OF THE NIGHT,
I SEE MY DREAMS COME TRUE.
I SEE THE BLUE-GREEN WATERS OF THE SEA,
I TURN TO THE FACE OF LOVE,
I SMELL THE SALT, THE WIND,
AND IT'S YOU I THINK OF,

I REMEMBER HER KISS,

AS SOFT AND SWEET AS A SUMMER RAIN,
I CLOSE MY EYES BLOT OUT THE HURT,
AND IMAGINE YOU ARE MINE AGAIN.
A COOL BREEZE BLOWS THRU MY HAIR,
AND THE WATER SEEM TO GLOW,
AND AS THE MYSTERY OF THE SEA,
THE SAME MYSTERY OF WHY YOU HAD TO GO.
NOW THE SEA IS MY ONLY COMPANION,
IT SEEMS TO SMILE AS THE WAVES RUSH TO SHORE
BUT IN ITS BLUE-GREEN TWILIGHT, IN THE WARMTH OF ITS LOVE
I WELL DREAM FOREVER MORE.

A PERIOD OF TIME

MY LIFE IS TWO-DIMENSIONAL, WITH THE SUN,
LAUGHTER, AND LOVE ONE MINUTE, THE RAIN, CLOUDS,
AND TEARS THE NEXT. ONE SAYING LOVE IS ALL, THE
OTHER SAYING WITHOUT WAR THERE IS NO PEACE. WHO
SHOULD I BELIEVE, WHICH PATH SHALL I FOLLOW?
EVERYONE RUNNING IN CIRCLES, GOING SOMEWHERE
AND YET NOT KNOWING WHERE OR HOW. THEY DREAM OF
THE FUTURE, BRIGHT AND SHINING AS A NEW PENNY,
YET SOMEHOW IT'S ALWAYS DARK. WHAT WE HOLD IN
OUR HEARTS IS DIFFERENT THAN WHAT FATE HAS IN
STORE FOR US, FOR IN OURS HEARTS EVERYTHING IS
LOVELY, YET IN REALITY IT IS CLOUDY AND UGLY.
WHICH WAY DO WE GO?
AS I STAND, DRINKING IN THE BEAUTY OF THE FALLING DAY,
SAYING GOOD-BYE TO ONE MORE DAY OF
HEARTACHE, I WONDER WHAT MIGHT BE IN STORE ON
THE MORROW. IT SHINES SO LOVELY IN IT'S RED
ORANGE TWILIGHT, PEEKING FROM BEHIND THE CLOUDS.
I KNOW I CAN'T DO NOTHING FOR MYSELF, BUT HOP FOR
A PERIOD OF TIME THAT IS A SUN-SHINNY AS MY DREAMS.

BEING MYSELF

THE BLACK SATIN COMES TO EMBRACE ME, THE WIND
LASHES THRU MY HAIR....DRYING EACH TEAR ALMOST
IMMEDIATELY AFTER IT LEAVES ITS HIDING PLACE.
THE PLACE WHERE IT CAN'T BE SCORNED OR LAUGHED
AT BY ON LOOKERS, BUT WHERE IT CAN SLIDE PEACEFUL
DOWN MY CHEEK UNTIL THE WIND WHIPS IT AWAY.
IT IS NEVER SEEN AGAIN, BUT OTHERS TAKE IT'S PLACE.
AND SO THE CYCLE GOES ON UNTIL THERE ARE NO
TEARS LEFT, MY EYES ARE DRY, THE WIND TAKES
ITS PLACE AMONG MY TREES.
THE SUN GLOWS RED AND SLOWLY
STARTS ERASING THE BLACKNESS. I
STAND, STRETCH, AND TRY TO RELIEVED, LONGED FOR,
AND A QUITE SILLY GRIN.
THEN....I AM QUITE MYSELF AGAIN.
OH HOW I LONG FOR DEATH TO TAKE ME
FORM THE PAIN I FEEL EACH TIME WE MEET.
TO LOVE....
TO SEE, TO FEEL, TO DRIVE BODY AND SOUL TO A
STATE OF ECSTASY FROM WHICH THERE IS NO RETURN.
TO KNOW HOW RAINDROPS DANCE IN A MIDNIGHT SHOWER,
THO ALL THEY DO IS FALL. TO TOUCH, TO GIVE THYSELF,
MIND AND BODY, TO A SPARKLING STAR, WHICH THE SUN
DISPOSES OF WITH NO HINT OF SORRY, BUT THEN
TO HAVE THE STAR SHINE TWICE AS BRIGHT ON
THE COMING MOON, LAUGHING, " I AM INVINCIBLE".
BUT NO, A STAR IS NOT ENOUGH, FOR DAYTIME NEEDS A
LOVER TOO. WHOM SHALL I CHOOSE?
A FLOWER, THO SMELLING FRAGRANT, DIES IN SUCH
SHORT TIME. TREES DO NOT DIE, BUT GROW BROWN AND
UGLY WITH PASSING YEARS. THEN STRIPPED NAKED, TRY
THE SORRY VIGIL OF HIDING THEIR NAKEDNESS IN THE
SHADOWS. THE SUN, SMIRKING DOWN SO EVIL,, IMMORAL
AS HE IS BEAUTIFUL. HE EMBRACES ME IN ARMS OF WARMTH.
I SHAN'T BE FOOLED BY HER. MY STAR MUST BE ENOUGH,
UNTIL SHE FINDS A WAY TO CONQUER THE SUN.

TIME

TIME HAS COME TO A STANDSTILL, LOVING LOVE,
YET HATING IT. WAITING FOR IT, THE WAIT IS LONG.
TOO LONG, SOMETIMES IT SEEMS. BUT HOW LONG IS A
LIFETIME? LOVE COMES AND GOES WITH TIME, SO I
SAY "STOP TIME". TIME.... THE ETERNAL BATTLE
WAGE FROM FOE TO FOE. TIME BETWEEN LOVE AND HATE.
HOW MUCH? A YEAR? AN HOUR? FOR A LIFETIME
IT TAKES TO FIND YOUR LOVE, ONLY A SECOND TO
DESTROY IT. TIME IS MY ENEMY, BUT THERE IS NO
FOE TO FIGHT, NO WAY TO WIN. IT ONLT TAKES A
MINUTE TO MAKE A MISTAKE, THOUSANDS TO FIND IT
OUT, EVEN MORE TO CORRECT IT.
TIME THE ETERNAL SALVATION, THE ETERNAL SPACE
DEATH. FIGHT TIME, AND YOU'LL NEVER WIN.
LOSE TO TIME AND OPEN YOUR DOOR TO SORROW.

FLOWERS

THE FLOWERS OF WARM,
BORN OUT OF A STORM,
ARE ORANGE-BRIGHT, AND DEEP BABY BLUE;
SO SWEET IS THEIR KISS,
AND THEY SAY IT LIKE THIS,
NE LOVE ME, HE LOVE NOT, I LOVE YOU.
THE FLOWERS OF HEAT,
SHOULD YOU CHANGE TO MEET,
ARE YELLOW SILK GOLDEN WEAVE;
THEY SING AND SWAY,
AND ALWAYS THEY SAY,
I CAN SEE IT, BUT CANNOT BELIVE.
THE FLOWERS OF COOL,
IN A DEEP MAGIC POOL,
THE GLORY OF RED, BROWN, AND GREEN;
THE TIME OF ITSELF,
THE SEASONAL PAINT SHELF,
UNCOVERED, THERE ARE DOUBTS TO BE SEEN.
THE FLOWERS COLD,
LIKE THE FLOWERS OS OLD,
ARE DEAD AND LOST AWAY,
THE RAIN WASH THEM OUT,
EVERY TRUTH, EVERY DOUBT,
NO MATTER WHAT THEY ARE TRYING TO SAY.
THE FLOWERS OF HATE,
FIRST BURN, THEN ABATE,
PRAY GOD THEY ALL SHRIVEL AND DIE,
FOR EASY THEY BLOOM,
AND LOVE THEY CONDUME,
NOT THAT FOR MY LOVE AND I.
