Dear Mr. Ray,

Can you provide an update on the status of the 1968 TET
Commemorative Plaque that we have previously corresponded about?
Thank you in advance for any information you are able to provide.

        Regards,

        John Rossie

Mr. Rossie: The Embassy has sent a diplomatic note to the Ministry of
Culture and Information requesting return of the plaque. We have not
received a response. Just and update, the plaque is no longer really out
of sight, but part of a display of the attack on the Embassy during Tet. We
will continue to work on this. Regards, Charles A. Ray

Mr. Rossie: I met with the museum people here and have had my staff speak
with a senior government advisor who lives in town. No one here has the
authority to make a decision, so I passed it to the Embassy. I understand
our Defense Attache has been in touch with central ministry people, but it
is beginning to look like we will not be able to get it back any time soon.
Sorry we haven't been able to "take this hill." Regards,
Charles A. Ray
Consul General

So, I guess now it's back in the hands of Ambassador Peterson...
