It has been rough locating anything since he is listed as being part of VMFA 315 in some places (Unit does not exist) and VMFA 314 in others. They went afloat for awhile with the 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade, Naval Task Group 79.3, and returned to Nam 1 August 1966. I was not able to attend due to my work schedule. We were stationed on hill 119 on the rocket belt perimeter around the Danang city. Our Btn. went afloat some time around May of 1969 and did several Operations from the LST/LPH ships that we were assigned to. My two ships were the USS Okinawa; and the USS IwoJima. I started as a ammo humper in rockets and eventually became radio operator for Plt Sgt. Sullivan. Where is Capt. McElroy?? You used to take my camel cigs and use them for chewing tobacco. Gunny Dinota (sp?) you were youngest gunny in the Corps. Later became a mustang 2nd Lt. Ralph Ashura who graduated from Univ. of Ohio (Miami). Gordomn Seabloom, who was the only other guy left out of our squad on May 27, '67. The first day of operation UnionII. Doc Rockwell who played football at Notre Dame and was the painters grandson. I helped carry you to the medivac that night when the NVA tried to over run us on Union I. You had your guts messed up from concussion from an 82mm mortar. Hey, Butch Hooley from Seattle. Cpl. Barbour, the three of us got caught out in front of the lines that same night. Barbout you got a bronze star out of it. Cpl. Billy Joe Simms from Alabama, you took me under your guidance when i 1st got there in Nam. You were my initial squad leader. Ya'll remember that night when the whole Battallion humped 39 hours straight? I was on Operations: Union, UnionII, Adair, Calhoun, Pike, Cochise, Shelbyville, Swift and Essex. All of the time with "Medivac Mike" and 1st Plt. They arent with us anymore but Pete Schraeder was my best bud. He was from St. Louis. Cpl John Rogers from Alberquerque N.M. He was an African-American from Bloomfield Hills, Mich. This is a section of Detroit. He would be about 49 or 50 now. About 6 ft. with stocky build. He was the only Black Marine that I ever had for a friend. We were pretty tight. We were the only two Black Marines in Fire Direction Control for Artillery. I would love to hear from my old buddy again. He was the only real friend that I had during my entire 3.5 years in the Corps and 2 years in Vietnam. Friends of mine wrote some of the young men also after I received the letters. I wrote Dick for almost five years. During my sophomore year of college the letters stopped very suddenly. Message is: I am trying to contact Richard Romine of Ohio who was one of my Marine Corps buddies at the time of the Korean War. He served from 1948 to 1970. Initially, he was enlisted personnel and was trained as an aerial photographer at Pensacola FL in 1949. In 1951, He went into the NavCad program and eventually became a Marine fighter pilot serving in Korea and later, in Vietnam where he received the Navy Cross for heroic actions as a helicopter pilot. In the late sixties, he became the executive officer of the Marine air detachment at the Weymouth Naval air Station just south of Boston, MA. I believe it was 1979 when he resigned his commission in the Marine Corps.
