My squad leader (John Caney) was on watch in an ambush we'd set. Most of the guys were sleeping. In the morning he told
us some VC passed right by us but he didn't shoot because most of us were asleep and his wasn't enough
firepower to bring them down--so he let them pass. Mom & dad told me I slept through a tornado in
Sadelia, MO as a kid. Duh? Lucky I guess. I had many close calls in Que Son and the guys were slugging it out
within yards from me on Swift. To tell you the truth, one guy in the book said he had no idea Union, Union II and Swift were
all in the same place (valley) until the book came out. I was like that. I had no idea we were up against the 2d NVA
division. Most of my tour in the valley, minus a few severe firefights, was fun if I may say it. I'm sure the officers knew
the larger picture. Mine certainly did. But we weren't sitting around wringing our hands--just running patrols.
